What is a Bust? a sculpture depicting a person's head and shoulders
What is a Mask?
Step 1: Research Requirements:
1.Research a region of the world where maskmaking is part of the cultural tradition.
2.Decide what region produces masks that you are most interested in.
3.Create a high relief mask OR full in-the-round 3-dimensional bust that incorporates details, facial feature characteristics, and stylistic choices similar to those produced in the region of your choice. This must be a unique, one-of-a-kind representation. You CANNOT simply copy one that you like from the internet.

Step 2 from above: Review the finished Google Presentation. Take note of the culture/region you appreciate and enjoy. Make a list of the characteristics. Note the colors used. Note the patterns, carving work, and embellishments used. Note the shape of the eyes, mouth, ears, nose, face, etc…
Step 3: Sketch/draw 3 completely different masks designs by referencing the internet images. Yes, 3 fairly detailed sketches. All 3 designs should demonstrate similar characteristics to those found in your chosen region/culture. How to begin: Start with a basic shape (triangular, oval, teardrop) Draw the eyes (exaggerated, wide, almond-shaped, heavy eyelids) Draw the nose (long and skinny, short and wide, stylized and simplified) Draw the mouth (exaggerated, open, closed, small lips, large lips, simplified) Draw the surface patterns and textures. Shade in the areas that will be pierced/cut out
Clay Requirements:
Basic requirements:
Minimum of 4 additions using the additive slab, pinch or coil construction method. (eyes, nose, mouth, & ears do not count)
Minimum 50% of mask surface is either built-up with additive surface pattern/decoration AND/OR incised with surface pattern or texture.
Freestanding head with neck base/freestanding full bust with shoulders OR mask with holes in the sides ready for hanging
Optional: Alternate materials (hair, beard, feathers, raffia, twine, beading, etc…) attached after final firing. This could be in the form of piercings, hair, adornments and other jewelry, etc… This needs to be pre-planned and very often improves the overall quality of the mask.
**You will not receive clay until I approve all 3 sketches. Sketches due by the end of class on day 2 of your planning.
