Clay tile assignment #1
leatherhard - The stage reached by clay after it has dried out from the plastic state and it is firm enough to pick up without distorting, but workable to carve, cut, join clay additions, and burnish.
plasticity- the quality of clay which allows it to be manipulated and still maintain its shape without cracking or sagging... the workability of the clay. Clays exhibit plasticity when mixed with water in certain proportions .
wedging- a process of kneading the clay to make it a more uniform texture and to remove air bubbles.
slab- In this construction method, plastic clay is rolled to a certain thickness, and pieces are cut out according to selected patterns and are then joined with thick pasting slip and coil "snakes." The pieces or "slabs" may be employed flat, or may be curved prior to slip pasting.
additive- includes all clay construction techniques where clay is added to the surface of another clay body
subtractive- includes all clay construction techniques where clay is taken away from the surface of another clay body.
incising- carving or defining areas or patterns in the clay body
low relief (bas-relief)- there are different degrees of relief depending on the degree of projection of the sculpted form from the field. Bas-relief is a very shallow projection.
What is clay?- Clay is a general term including many combinations of one or more clay minerals with traces of metal oxides and organic matter
What is glaze?- a liquid suspension of finely ground materials that is applied by brushing, pouring, or spraying on the surface of bisque-fired ceramic ware. After drying, the ware is fired to the temperature at which glaze ingredients will melt together to form a glassy surface.
kiln- a furnace made up of refractory clay materials for firing ceramic products at extremely high temperatures. When dry, clay becomes firm and when fired in a kiln, permanent physical and chemical changes occur. These reactions, among other changes, cause the clay to be converted into a ceramic material. .
